What is EMDR?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a therapeutic approach designed to help people heal from the emotional distress and symptoms caused by overwhelming life experiences, trauma, or deeply stressful events. Instead of relying solely on talk therapy, which is standard modis operandi of most therapy, EMDR helps the brain metabolize stuck material, which is why it always seems like your right back at square one every time you get triggered. Bilateral stimulation, which is elicited by eye movements, either by following the therapists fingers, or with little doo dads or apps EMDR therapists may have, is the mechanism for this process. It works with the nervous system and memory networks helping people to release what has been stored in the body, nervous system, and mind, so that people can move forward with greater freedom and resilience.
